MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL AUTHORITY, (MUHA), offers short term disability to Care Team Members; STD plans are not administered by the State’s insurance office, (PEBA), nor are the plans employer funded. What this means is STD is paid for by the Care Team Member in the form of premiums from their paycheck. MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL AUTHORITY, (MUHA) contracts with American Fidelity Insurance which provides short term disability to Care Team Members. Payroll deductions can be arranged for automatic deductions. Care Team Members can enroll in Short Term Disability anytime throughout the year prior to sickness or injury.
Short Term Disability (STD) pays a percentage of your salary if you become temporarily disabled, meaning that you are not able to work for a short period of time due to sickness or injury (excluding on-the-job injuries, which are covered by workers compensation insurance). Short term disability (STD) benefits start after you have met a 7-day waiting period and can provide a benefit for up to three months. STD benefits pay 60% of your pre-disability salary. Short term disability lasts up to three months.
Review the SC PEBA webpage, SLTD Plan Details, Insurance Benefits Guide and SLTD Conversion Information for detailed plan information.
Medical evidence is required for initial enrollment and if you would like to change the waiting period from 180 to 90 days throughout the year. You will need to complete the SLTD Medical History Statement and submit it to the address listed in the packet.
Members of the SCRS or PORS retirement plans under age 65 may apply for disability retirement if they become permanently disabled before leaving covered employment. Members must have at least 5 years of earned service, or 8 years if they are a Class III member.
