A Beaufort girl who was once so sick that she needed a heart transplant is now the star of a television commercial. Morgan Porter is part of the fundraising campaign for the new Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital at the Medical University of South Carolina. The tagline: “We gave her a new heart, and she stole ours.”

It’s a perfect summary of Morgan’s journey from the day she arrived at MUSC as a very sick 2-year-old to the happy 7-year-old she is today. The bubbly, adorable little girl’s story captivated people across the Lowcountry as she and her family waited for a donor heart to become available. Morgan was kept alive with the help of a Berlin Heart, a device that supported her damaged heart, until her parents got the news they’d been waiting for: A new heart was on the way to MUSC for Morgan.

Today, Morgan is an honor roll student who loves horseback riding and recently played a mermaid in the Beaufort Children’s Theater’s performance of “Peter Pan.” She’s also serving as an ambassador for the new Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital at MUSC, which is scheduled to open in 2019. It will include features that families like hers asked for such as larger patient rooms, expanded services and more spacious, family-centered amenities.

Morgan says her parents are her heroes. It’s easy to see why in this video.
