On June 24, at St. Luke’s Chapel on the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the MUSC Residency Class of 2022 graduated with full pomp and circumstance.
The program included presentations of two Chief Resident Awards, the Preceptor of the Year Award, and the Residency Committee Exit Award followed by the presentation of certificates to the graduates of both the post graduate year one (PGY1) and post graduate year two (PGY2) programs. In addition, there were presentations of certificates for both the Research Certificate Program and the Academician Preparation Program.
Krista McElray, residency manager and PGYI residency program director, welcomed guests. Philip Hall, dean of the MUSC College of Pharmacy, introduced MUSC pharmacy keynote speakers Walt ’88 and Lynn Uber ’88. MUSC pharmacy luminaries in their own right, the Ubers received the award named for a MUSC pharmacy legend – the William H. Golod Award.
Speakers Lynn and Walt Uber
The Ubers have been awarded many honors as teachers and preceptors, both winning multiple teacher of the year honors throughout their careers. They met at the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy, where they both received bachelor of science degrees in 1986. They married in December of 1986 and were the only two from their graduating class to pursue Pharm.D.s, which they earned from MUSC in 1988, and careers in clinical pharmacy.
In 1989, Lynn completed an adult internal medicine/surgery residency at MUSC and Walt completed one in critical care, after which they accepted faculty positions with the College of Pharmacy. Starting in 1993, Lynn Uber worked with the adult and pediatric abdominal transplant program and Walt Uber worked with the adult and pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery/Heart and Lung Transplant program.
They have been mentors/advisors for MUSC pharmacy and medical students, residents and fellows for the past 30 years. As the Pharm.D. "forefathers" of the abdominal and thoracic transplant programs, they have been recognized often for their contributions to pharmacy practice.
Awards and Certificates
The Chief Resident Award was presented to Jessica Newman as PGY1 chief resident and to Tramauni Brock as PGY2 chief resident.
