Charleston, S.C. — The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) today announced a significant in-kind contribution from Henry Schein, Inc., the world’s largest provider of health care solutions to office based dental and medical practitioners. The company’s multi-year support was signed in November of 2025 and advances the Henry Schein Innovation Laboratory at the MUSC James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. The investment reflects Henry Schein’s bold commitment to enhancing the future of dentistry and supports the college’s position as a national leader in digital dentistry education, patient care, and clinical innovation.

“Henry Schein has a long history of supporting dental education and empowering the next generation of oral health professionals,” said David Kochman, senior vice president and chief corporate affairs officer, Henry Schein. “Our partnership with MUSC reflects our shared commitment to driving innovation, expanding access to digital technologies, and preparing students to thrive in today’s evolving dental landscape.”

Digital workflows power faster dental care

Henry Schein’s in-kind contribution will support digital dentistry and innovation activities, including the expansion of the digital dentistry curriculum, on both D.M.D. and graduate program’s levels, as well as the expansion of the Innovation laboratory. The five-year investment will support technology acquisition, maintenance, software upgrades, and major renewal cycles, ensuring that MUSC remains at the forefront of integration in dental education, clinical care, and research, which in turn will lead to quality care for our surrounding communities. Funding will also accelerate faculty and student training programs and expand the laboratory’s service for MUSC’s satellite dental locations and residency programs. With Henry Schein’s support, MUSC continues to serve as a central resource for training dentists, residents, faculty, and dental teams across the state and beyond.

“A seamless digital workflow is the essential bridge between a clinician’s expertise and the patient experience,” said Mackenzie Richter, vice president, Global Commercial Digital Workflow Solutions, Henry Schein. “By removing technology silos and mastering interoperability early on, tomorrow’s clinicians can start their careers not only digital-first but also with the confidence to use these technologies. We have a vision for a unified, open digital future in dentistry, and this partnership reflects that.”

Opened in September 2024, the Henry Schein Innovation Lab is the college’s centralized hub for training in digital workflows – integrating scanners, design software, milling units, and 3D printing technologies across clinical, preclinical, and research programs. The facility provides dental students and residents with the hands on experience necessary to master modern, technology driven dentistry and deliver faster, more predictable patient care.

“This significant contribution from Henry Schein accelerates our vision for a truly integrated digital dental education, giving students hands-on access to advanced technologies and contemporary clinical workflows,” said Fabio Antonio Piola Rizzante, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.B.A., assistant dean for innovation and associate professor. “This partnership strengthens MUSC’s leadership in clinical innovation and technology integration and is essential to our mission to continuously innovate and prepare graduates who can leverage technology to deliver efficient, evidence based care in their communities. In addition, this partnership opens new opportunities for collaborative research, product testing, and professional development that will benefit the broader dental community.”

The next generation of digital dentistry leaders

As South Carolina’s only dental school, the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine plays a critical role in training South Carolina’s dental workforce, with approximately 76% of graduates remaining in-state to practice. Investments in digital dentistry ensure that MUSC-trained clinicians enter the workforce equipped to lead the adoption of technologies increasingly sought by dental practices across the country.

“The Henry Schein Innovation Laboratory represents the future of digital dental education,” said Sarandeep Huja, D.D.S., Ph.D., dean of the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. “This is much more than a technology investment. Together with Henry Schein, we are shaping the next generation of digital dentistry practitioners and leaders.”
