CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 25, 2026) – The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Center for Healthy Aging is hosting its 10th annual MUSC Senior Expo on April 1st. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Charleston Area Convention Center. This is an excellent opportunity for seniors in the Tri-county, their families and caregivers to navigate the world of senior care in the Charleston area, where they can age in place and achieve a better quality of life.
Hermes Florez, M.D., executive director of the MUSC Center for Healthy Aging, explained the focus of this year’s event titled “Integrated Care will lead to Healthy Aging”. “Our goal is to facilitate patient-centered care by bringing together different services and providers for an integrated approach to health care. Integrated care connects the many services available in our community into one coordinated system, resulting in improved outcomes.”
The Senior Expo provides a perfect setting for collaboration among providers and cooperation for care coordination. "We are coming together for the care of our senior population in the Tri-county area,” said Florez.
For the third straight year, the Senior P.R.E.P. (Planning and Resources for Emergency Preparedness) program, along with several partner agencies, will discuss the importance of emergency planning.
Seniors may encounter obstacles during an emergency, including limited mobility and medical needs. The Senior P.R.E.P. program promotes individual preparedness, awareness and planning with family, friends and caregivers ahead of an emergency.
Participants get help navigating the many levels of care and issues that affect seniors, including independent versus assisted living, hospice care, home care, health insurance, Medicare, transportation and mobility assistance. Advice on financial planning, wills, trusts and veterans’ benefits is also offered.
Local providers, including MUSC physicians and researchers, will be on-site to offer complimentary fall-risk assessments and health screenings, such as hearing, vision, colon cancer, HIV, blood pressure and blood glucose.
The MUSC Senior Expo will feature a central stage area with live, interactive demonstrations throughout the day. Cindi Day, MUSC Wellness Center, will start things off with a Rock Steady Boxing activity that focuses on Parkinson’s patients but benefits all. Jillian ’s chair yoga, a Dorchester Seniors’ line-dancing performance, and a flight demonstration from the Center for Birds of Prey will follow. MUSC students will be available throughout the day to help attendees to maximize their visit.
Admission and parking are free. There will be shuttles available throughout the parking lot.
