As South Carolina’s communities continue to grow, so does the need for accessible, high-quality health care close to home. MUSC Health is meeting that need by expanding into rapidly developing areas and opening new medical pavilions that bring comprehensive care to communities where access had long been limited.
The Clements Ferry area is no exception to the Lowcountry’s rapid growth. As MUSC Health evaluated opportunities to expand care in the community, leaders assessed population trends and access within a 40-minute driving radius, identifying gaps in services and proactively planning to meet the area’s long-term health care needs.
The result was the new MUSC Health Clements Ferry Pavilion, which opened to the public in December of 2025. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on Jan. 27, Eugene Hong, M.D., chief physician executive for MUSC Health and MUSC Physicians, addressed the area’s needs.
“This new medical pavilion represents more than a building. It represents access – access to high-quality care, access to specialized services and access to the peace of mind that comes from knowing world-class health care is close to home,” Hong said.
“As our region continues to grow at a remarkable pace, MUSC is committed to growing alongside it – thoughtfully and strategically – to meet the evolving needs of our communities. The Clements Ferry Pavilion brings important medical specialties closer to the residents who rely on them. It strengthens MUSC Health’s ability to deliver care where it is needed most and ensures patients no longer have to travel far to receive the expert care they deserve.”
According to Hong, this service area, which includes Huger, Jamestown and Cordesville, as well as some parts of McClellanville and Awendaw, could see about an 8% growth in population during the next five years. Additionally, the entire 29492 ZIP Code, where the facility is located, is expected to see a 14% increase in population growth over the next five years.
Demand for MUSC Health services in the area continues to grow, with patients generating more than 85,000 office visits annually – up 9% from 2023.
The Clements Ferry Pavilion is a four-story 80,000-square-foot medical office building that serves Berkeley and Charleston counties. The pavilion brings a wide range of comprehensive, coordinated care services together in one convenient location.
Patients have access to more than a dozen specialties, including advanced imaging, adult and pediatric primary care, orthopedics, physical and occupational therapy, ophthalmology, heart and vascular care, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology and infusion services. The multispecialty clinic also offers care in surgery, rheumatology, endocrinology, neurology, neurosurgery and more.
Hong noted that the Clements Ferry Pavilion site was designed with future growth in mind. This will allow MUSC Health leaders to adapt services as the surrounding community continues to grow.
“We started planning the Clements Ferry Pavilion four years ago when most of the development in the area hadn’t even started. We are watching the expansion and seeing how we will grow our services,” he said.
Hong added that plans are underway to expand services at the pavilion, which will offer significant convenience and access to patients.
“We will have MRI capabilities, and even more advanced breast health services to offer the community, like highly specialized breast biopsies.”
Hong said that creating a welcoming environment was a priority for the leadership team, and that included giving thoughtful attention to the pavilion’s aesthetic and unique artwork. “We truly believe that art is part of a healing environment. We took special care to reflect the local history and legacy of our community. We sourced all local artists.”
As patients enter the Clements Ferry Pavilion, they are greeted by artwork that reflects the Lowcountry’s history and culture, including a collection of handwoven sweetgrass baskets, a Gullah-inspired nature mural and pieces influenced by the area’s rich indigo heritage.
“MUSC wants to fully embrace the areas we are in, and we firmly believe that the best care is delivered locally,” Hong concluded. “That is an important philosophy for MUSC Health. We want to deliver high-quality care directly to our local communities.”
