In accordance with the statutes of the State of South Carolina, the Board of Trustees is the final authority and the governing body of the colleges, outreach programs, and ancillary functions of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the hospitals, clinics, outreach programs, and ancillary functions of the Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA). The Board establishes the general policies of the University and MUHA, defines educational, research, and clinical activities and programs, and approves annual budgets and requests for State appropriations. The Board names the principal officers of the University, including the President and Vice Presidents, and the CEO of MUSC Health.
The Board consists of sixteen trustees including the Governor or his designee, a gubernatorial appointee, and fourteen being elected by the South Carolina General Assembly. According to the Board’s bylaws, the Trustees convene at least 6 times annually, and the meetings of many of the Board’s committees are held the day prior to the full Board meeting.
Mr. Schulze was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2002 as the lay representative from the Third Congressional District. He is the current Chairman of the MUSC Board of Trustees.
Mr. Schulze is a graduate of Georgia Military Academy and earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Georgia. He received his master's degree in accounting from the University of South Carolina. He is a past Distinguished Lecturer at the University of Georgia.
From 1968-1972, he served in the United States Air Force. For three years of his four years of service, he was stationed in the Far East and Southeast Asia. His eight decorations for honorable service include four Outstanding Unit awards with "V" device for Valor, the Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars for service in Vietnam and Thailand and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm for Valor.
Mr. Schulze is a retired shareholder in a regional accounting and consulting firm. He currently provides financial forensics services as an investigator and expert witness. He is also a licensed private investigator in the state of South Carolina and a former president of the South Carolina Association of CPAs, as well as a former member and chairman of the South Carolina Board of Accountancy.
In addition to serving in the leadership of MUSC, he is also a member of the Finance and Audit committee for both Shriners International and the twenty-two hospitals of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Mr. Schulze and his wife, Sarah Alice, reside in Greenwood and have two daughters.
Dr. Brown, a native Charlestonian, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2018 as the medical profession representative from the Sixth Congressional District.He is the current Vice Chairman of the MUSC Board of Trustees.
Dr. Brown is a 1991 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor's degree in engineering. After four years at sea as a commissioned naval officer, he took an assignment in Charleston to teach naval engineering at The Citadel. While there, he earned a master's degree at night, resigned his commission with the Navy, and matriculated into MUSC's College of Medicine. In 2002, he graduated from the College of Medicine and returned to active duty as a physician. During his twenty years of service, Dr. Brown served with distinction on multiple deployments at sea and on the ground in support of the Marines.
Upon his retirement from active duty, Dr. Brown returned to his hometown and practiced emergency medicine for years before transitioning to private practice. He still devotes time to treating veterans as part-time staff at the Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Dr. Brown is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Physicians. He is also a member of Sigma Pi Phi fraternity. He sits on the boards of First Capital Bank, MUSC Physicians, and the MUSC Foundation.
Dr. Brown and his wife, Deborah, reside in Charleston and have two children, Gabriel and Lillian.
Mrs. Barnes, a native of Rock Hill, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2014 as the lay representative from the Fifth Congressional District.
Mrs. Barnes graduated from Clemson University in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation. She started her professional career with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) as a patient service coordinator. Among her many responsibilities with MDA, she represented South Carolina at the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethons. After working with MDA, Mrs. Barnes began a new career path in the computer industry. She is vice president of Applied Data Technologies, which she cofounded in 1998. The company has grown into a leading top-tier reseller of Hewlett-Packard products. She has served on many panels and advisory boards with Hewlett-Packard.
Mrs. Barnes and her husband, Ruck, reside in Rock Hill and have three children and six grandchildren.
Mr. Battle was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2013 as the lay representative from the Seventh Congressional District.
Mr. Battle graduated from The Citadel with a bachelor’s degree in business and received his Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. In 2009, he received an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Francis Marion University.
He served in the United States Army in Vietnam as a First Lieutenant. He was president of the South Carolina Aquaculture Association from 1994-1997; chairman of the Marion County Hospital District from 1995-1996; chairman of the Center for Marine and Wetland Studies at Coastal Carolina University; and was appointed to the Francis Marion University Business School Advisory Board in the 1980s. Mr. Battle served eight terms in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1997-2012. In 2002 and 2008, he received the National Federation of Independent Business’s SC Guardian of Small Business award. He was also awarded Legislator of the Year by the Career and Technology Education Administration Division of the SC Association of School Administrators (SCASA). In 2011, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the North Eastern Strategic Alliance (NESA), an economic development alliance for the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina. He is co-owner of several businesses in Nichols and Mullins.
Mr. Battle currently serves as chairman of the of the Investment Committee of the Marion County Healthcare Foundation Board. He is a co-owner of several businesses in Nichols and Mullins.
Mr. Battle and his wife, Katherine, reside in Nichols and have one daughter.
Dr. Butehorn was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2019 as the medical profession representative from the Fourth Congressional District.
Dr. Butehorn is a 1994 Duke University graduate majoring in biomedical engineering with a minor concentration in history. He earned his medical degree from the MUSC College of Medicine in 1998 and completed his otolaryngology, head and neck surgery residency at Albany Medical College. After residency, he joined Spartanburg and Greer Ear, Nose and Throat & Allergy, a private practice. Dr. Butehorn has served as the trustee representing Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union Counties at the South Carolina Medical Association and was elected President for the 2025-2026 term. He is a member and past president of the Spartanburg County Medical Society. He is the chief of the division of otolaryngology at Spartanburg Medical Center and co-director of the head and neck tumor board at Gibbs Cancer Center. He is an assistant professor at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Carolinas Campus. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy and past president of the South Carolina Otolaryngic Society and the MUSC College of Medicine Alumni Association.
Dr. Butehorn and his wife, Lori, reside in Spartanburg and have two children.
Dr. Castles was appointed to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2017 by Governor Henry McMaster.
Dr. Castles is a second-generation pediatrician practicing in Columbia, South Carolina, at the office his father founded, Pediatric Associates. Dr. Castles is a graduate of the MUSC College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at the MUSC Children’s Hospital. Dr. Castles is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Castles previously served on the Board of Trustees at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. For many years he has been an active member of the MUSC community serving as an interviewer during the admissions process for the College of Medicine and was a previous member of the MUSC Board of Visitors. Former Governor Mark Sanford honored Dr. Castles for his numerous charitable contributions and dedication to his community with the prestigious Order of the Silver Crescent. In 2014, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine awarded him Preceptor of the Year and he has been named The State newspaper’s Best Pediatrician from 2015-2019.
Dr. Castles and his wife, Libby Lee Gantt, reside in Columbia and have six children and nine grandchildren. Beyond his devotion to family and work, he enjoys a variety of other activities including golf and water sports.
Dr. Christian, a native of Greenwood, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2017 as the medical profession representative from the Third Congressional District.
Dr. Christian received his bachelor’s degree in English from Wofford College and his medical degree from the MUSC College of Medicine. He recently retired after serving over 33 years as an orthopedic surgeon in Greenwood. The primary focus of his practice was reconstructive surgery including total knee and hip replacement. Dr. Christian is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Christian is past director of the South Carolina Joint Center at Self Regional Healthcare.
An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Christian and his wife, Pattie, reside in Greenwood and have three children and five grandchildren.
Dr. Davis, a native of Florence, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2018 as the medical profession representative from the Seventh Congressional District.
Dr. Davis graduated from Wofford College with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1994. He earned his doctoral degree from the MUSC College of Dental Medicine in 1999, where he also finished an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency. After practicing in Mount Pleasant for six years, Dr. Davis and his family moved to Florence where he has practiced since 2006. He is a member of the Florence Dental Society and past president of the Pee Dee District Dental Association. He has served on the Board of Governors of the South Carolina Dental Association and has been a member of the South Carolina Delegation to the American Dental Association. Also, Dr. Davis served on the Board of Trustees for both All Saints’ Episcopal Day School and Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School and was on the Dental Advisory Board for Florence-Darlington Technical College. Currently, he serves on the South Carolina Golf Association Board of Directors. He is a member and former elder of First Presbyterian Church in Florence.
Dr. Davis and his wife, Tabatha, reside in Florence and have two children.
Dr. Johnson, a native of Summerville, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 1994 as the medical profession representative from the First Congressional District. Dr. Johnson served as Chairman of MUSC’s Board of Trustees from 2002-2006 and again from 2014-2018.
Dr. Johnson received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the College of Charleston and his medical degree from the MUSC College of Medicine. After an orthopedic surgery residency at MUSC, he completed three adult spine surgery fellowships in Texas, California, and Hong Kong. He founded Southeastern Spine Institute in 1990. Dr. Johnson is past president of the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association, the South Carolina Spine Society, and the State Representative to the Southern Medical Association. He has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Hong Kong; Madrid, Spain; Valencia Spain; Lyon, France; Paris, France; and the Royal London Hospital in London, England.
Mrs. Johnson-Williams was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2013 as the lay representative from the Sixth Congressional District.
Mrs. Johnson-Williams received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, MEd in special education, and EdS in educational administration from South Carolina State University (SCSU). Mrs. Johnson-Williams currently serves as a consultant for the South Carolina Department of Education. She previously held the positions of adjunct professor at SCSU and Claflin University and as a teacher, department chair, and program specialist for Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five. Mrs. Johnson-Williams participated for two years as the Director of Special Education at Felton Laboratory and as the Special Education Program Specialist and Department Chairperson for Special Education at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School. Her former military service in the 815th Personnel Army Reserve Unit is also something she treasures greatly.
Her past and present affiliations include president of Northwood Estates Neighborhood HOA Association; Advisory Board for Low Country Healthy Start; Chair of Family Selection for Edisto Habitat for Humanity/Board of Directors and Orangeburg Community Task Force; Orangeburg Branch of the NAACP; member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; The Orangeburg Links, Inc.; Phi Delta Kappa International; First Vice-President of the SCSU Alumni Association; Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development; the Edisto Fork Community Development Center; the National Education Association; the American Business Women's Association; and, the South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators. She was president of the Council for Exceptional Children Local Chapter and president of the State of South Carolina Council of Exceptional Children. Mrs. Johnson-Williams is a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, where she serves as Senior Missionary President and member of the Stewardship Ministry and Women's Guild. She serves with the Orangeburg City Department of Public Safety Trio Community Safe Haven Program and Tiffany Grant Foundation. Previously she served as president of the Usher's Ministry.
Now an author, Mrs. Johnson-Williams and her husband, Cecil, reside in Orangeburg.
Dr. Lemon, a native of Barnwell, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2014 as the medical profession representative from the Second Congressional District. He served as Chairman of MUSC's Board of Trustees from 2020-2024.
Dr. Lemon has practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery since finishing his residency at Emory University. Before Emory, he graduated from Clemson University and the MUSC College of Dental Medicine, where he also completed an internship. Dr. Lemon is a past president of the Greater Columbia Dental Society, Central District Dental Society, and the South Carolina Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Dr. Lemon and his wife, Karrie, reside in Columbia. Dr. Lemon’s son is also graduate of the MUSC College of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Smith was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2013 as the medical profession representative from the Fifth Congressional District.
Dr. Smith retired from Sumter OB/GYN after serving nearly 50 years dedicating his practice to women's health in the Sumter community. He is board certified by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Smith graduated from Wofford College in 1967 and was a public school teacher from 1967-1968. He earned his medical degree from the MUSC College of Medicine in 1972 and was an honor graduate, being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) national honors medical society. He is the past department chair of OB/GYN at Tuomey Healthcare System; past chief of staff at Tuomey Healthcare System; member of the Sumter-Clarendon-Lee Medical Society; past president of South Carolina OB/GYN Society; past representative of the American College of OB/GYN legislative task force; past chairman of Wilson Hall School Athletic Association; past board member of Sunset Country Club; and past member of the Converse College Board of Visitors.
Dr. Smith and his wife, Jody, reside in Sumter and have four children and nine grandchildren.
Mr. Stavrinakis, a lifetime resident of Charleston, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2013 as the lay representative from the First Congressional District.
Mr. Stavrinakis is president and CEO of Stavrinakis Franchise Consulting, M.E.S. Travel and Junkets, Inc., and Taverna Hospitality. He is a 1986 graduate of Charleston Southern University with a bachelor's degree in economics and a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
Mr. Stavrinakis and his wife, Karen, who is a graduate of MUSC, reside in Charleston and have three children.
Mr. Stephenson, a lifelong South Carolinian, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 1998 as the lay representative from the Fourth Congressional District. He served as Chairman of the MUSC Board of Trustees from 2010-2014.
Mr. Stephenson earned both his bachelor's and juris doctorate degrees from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Stephenson has practiced law since 1979 as a litigator for most of his professional life but now mediates civil cases. He has been consistently recognized by "The Best Lawyers in America," one of the "Top 25 Attorneys in South Carolina," and other similar designations. Mr. Stephenson's contributions to public service include President of the Legal Services Agency of Western Carolina; President of the Greenville Cancer Society; Greenville Civil Service Commission member; and 300 for Greenville.
Mr. Stephenson and his wife, Dianne, live in Greenville and have two children.
Dr. Witherspoon was appointed to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2019 as the Governor's at-large representative.
Dr. Witherspoon is a 1974 graduate of the MUSC College of Medicine. Dr. Witherspoon is one of South Carolina's first board-certified radiation oncologists and practiced medicine for over 40 years. He is one of the founding members of South Carolina Oncology Associates (SCOA), the seventh-largest private oncology practice in the United States. He holds advisory positions nationally and internationally. He is a life member of the Royal Society of Medicine in the United Kingdom and a past medical advisor to the Republic of Ireland, and a member of multiple national organizations, including the American Society for Radiation Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Radiology, and the American Radium Society. Dr. Witherspoon's previous board experience includes service to the American Cancer Society, South Carolina Oncology Society, USC and MUSC Board of Visitors.
Since retiring from his practice, Dr. Witherspoon can be found enjoying golf, astronomy, college sports, oenology, and spending time with his family. Dr. Witherspoon and his wife, Cynthia, a 1975 graduate of MUSC, live in Columbia and have three children, five grandsons, and two granddaughters.
