"Integrated Specialty Care for Bipolar Disorders and Co-occurring Conditions: The MUSC Bipolar Disorder Treatment and Research Clinic"
Bryan K. Tolliver, M.D., Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Medical University of South Carolina
Bipolar disorder is a leading contributor to global burden of disease that exerts a devastating toll on individuals, their families, and society. Accurate, timely diagnosis is crucial for successful management but is complicated by its henotypic heterogeneity and by the high prevalence of other psychiatric and medical conditions that often accompany bipolar illness. Substance use disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma-related disorders are common in those with bipolar disorder yet are understudied and poorly understood, particularly with regard to treatment research. The presentation will review the scope of the problem and discuss evolving approaches for integrating research and treatment in this challenging clinical population.
