Meningitis Vaccine $50 @ Student Health

Student Health Services has 25 doses of the Meningococcal Vaccine (Menactra) which will expire at the end of January 2014 and we wish to use up our current stock. The vaccine costs $130 or more at most travel clinics. To avoid having to waste this vaccine when it reaches its expiration date, we are selling our remaining stock at less than 50% its cost. Once we exhaust this supply, the new vaccine cost will be back to $130/dose.
If you wish to receive the vaccine, you can come to Student Health with a check or cash for $50. You do not need an appointment, but we do not administer vaccines after 4:00 pm.

Information: Meningococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, also called meningococcus. About 10% of the population have this type of bacteria living in their nasal passages and throat with no signs or symptoms of disease ("carriers"). But sometimes Neisseria meningitidis bacteria can invade the body causing certain illnesses, which are known as meningococcal disease.
Anyone can get meningococcal disease. But it is most common in infants and people 16-21 years. Children with certain medical conditions, such as lack of a spleen, have an increased risk of getting meningococcal disease. College freshmen living in dorms are also at increased risk. The vaccine is recommended for adolescents and young adults, as well as those traveling to parts of the world endemic for meningitis (Africa). The vaccine is also recommended for anyone who wishes to reduce their chances of getting bacterial meningitis.
