SAVE THE DATE: Health Literacy: The Challenge and Effective Solutions

Health Literacy Seminars

Keynote speaker:

Keenan Group, Inc-Experts in Health Literacy

Purpose: To provide information and education on health literacy challenges and solutions. Low health literacy is a major source of economic inefficiency in the U.S. healthcare system. An initial approximation places the order of magnitude of the cost of low health literacy to the U.S. economy in the range of $106 billion to $238 billion annually. This represents between 7 percent and 17 percent of all personal healthcare expenditures (source: Low Health Literacy: Implications for National Health Policy).

Objectives:
- Define health literacy and list at-risk populations
- Summarize health consequences associated with limited health literacy
- Describe the provider?s role in health literacy and why it matters
- List 3 techniques to modify currently used print materials and list 4 writing and design principles that make a document one people can read and will want to read
- Explain the role of teach-back and how it can enhance clear verbal communication
