The Teen Health Leadership Program is a collaborative project between the MUSC CON and the MUSC Library, St John's High School, and Communities in Schools. The purpose of this after school program on Johns Island is to promote health literacy, encourage health careers among young people of diverse backgrounds, and develop leadership skills enabling the students to design and implement outreach projects to improve the awareness and use of quality health information in their community. Each year a small cohort of these students are funded to present their health research and their community outreach project in Washington, DC to the staff of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The outcomes from this program are significant with 98% of program participants having been accepted and enrolled in College. Many of the students are the first in their families to attend College.
