Mission

The mission of the Division of Global and Community Health is to advance the development of evidence-based socio-ecological interventions, and evaluate strategies for their large-scale implementation. Our work focuses on improving the health behavior and mental health of underserved individuals, families, and communities both globally and locally.

Welcome

Scott Henggeler, Ph.D.
Michael D. Sweat, Ph.D.
Director, Division of Global and Community Health

The Division of Global and Community Health (GCH) changed our name in 2016 from Family Services Research Center (FSRC), which was established in 1992.  Our main purpose is to identify and increase the effectiveness of interventions to improve health, with a focus on such topics as health behavior, mental health and substance abuse services for children, adolescents, and their families. Our primary strategies have been to conduct rigorous research on the development, validation, and dissemination of clinically effective and cost effective interventions. Most of our work utilizes socio-ecological theory, targeting not just the individual, but also the social setting.  We have a robust global health research portfolio, and have active projects spanning multiple continents, including a long term collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), the premier research institution in Tanzania.

GCH projects have included numerous community-based randomized trials with challenging clinical populations (e.g., rural populations in low-income countries, violent and chronic juvenile offenders, youths presenting psychiatric emergencies, substance abusing juvenile offenders, maltreating families), and dissemination studies for multisystemic therapy and other evidence-based treatments are being conducted in multiple states and nations. We earlier received the Annie E. Casey Families Count Award as well as the Points of Light Foundation President's Award in recognition of excellence in community service directed at solving community problems.
