Applications are due by November 1 the year prior to matriculation. All positions are filled through the match and the ERAS system is used for receipt of applications.
Residents are selected on a fair and equal basis without regard to race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Selection is based on aptitude, academic credentials, personal characteristics, and ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
All applicants are required to complete and submit via ERAS the common application form (CAF), board scores (USMLE or COMLEX) [a minimum passing score is required], at least 2 letters of recommendation, a personal statement, a dean's letter, a medical school transcript, a photo (photo's cannot be viewed until an interview has been offered), and for foreign medical graduates; ECFMG Status Report.
The minimum requirements for application are passing scores on Part I of the USMLE or COMLEX. Part II (medical knowledge and clinical skills) must be passed prior to ranking of the individual. For international medical graduates who need a visa, J-1 visas are supported by the department. Applicants must be able to obtain a South Carolina limited medical license.
On receipt of an application an email confirmation will be sent. The resident selection committee will review all "complete" applications, and a subset of the applicants will be interviewed. A letter and/or email will be sent regarding the committee's decision to offer an interview. Only those applicants interviewed will be considered for the Match. Due to Dean's letters not being released until November 1 we will accept applications as "complete" prior to that date. Decisions regarding interviews will start October 1 and interviews will be scheduled from November 1 thru January 31 the following year. The deadline for receipt of the common application form is November 1. Applications must be complete by November 15th.
At the end of the interviewing period, the Resident Selection Committee objectively evaluates each candidate and prepares a list of applicants in rank order, which is then entered for the National Match process within the Office of Graduate Medical Education.
