Laptop Standards

The Office of the Chief Information Officer has established the following standards for student laptops. Students whose laptops meet or exceed the following requirements will be supported on the MUSC network. If students wish to purchase a laptop prior to coming to MUSC, it should at least meet the following requirements. We do not require a specific brand and will support both Windows and Macintosh computers on the university's network. If a student wishes, a laptop may be purchased through the university.

  • 1.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 80GB HDD
  • 802.11 a/g (laptop)
  • OS X 10.4

  • 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 80GB HDD
  • 802.11 a/g (laptop)
  • Windows XP SP3

The Library (4th floor, room 426) provides limited support for student-owned laptops. Services include access to an isolated (from MUSC) network connection to download software patches and virus upgrades, limited troubleshooting for network access problems, and assistance configuring laptops for MUSC network access. Some support and service is also available from central IT Desktop and Support Services group at 25 Ehrhardt Street.
