The First Flight of SEM

(Space Experiment Module)

on STS-80 Columbia

The SEM (Space Experiment Module) is a new NASA educational initiative administered by the Space Shuttle Small Payload Project at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. It provides small low cost modules for educational programs to conduct research aboard the Space Shuttle. CAN DO was honored to be chosen to help pioneer this exciting program. For the first flight, the CAN DO Team designed two modules. SEM 1 contained four active experiments, that is experiments that require power and are computer controlled. SEM 2 contained individual student passive experiments that do not require power or activation.
