KidSat STS 81

January 1997

Buist Academy

Laing Middle School

On January 10, 1997 STS 81 launched into space carrying KidSat cameras and students hopes and aspirations into space. Middle school students at Laing Middle School and Buist Academy prepared themselves for Student Mission Operations Control (SMOC) to participate in the excitement of a real Space Shuttle Mission. Students were busy studying orbit maps, weather data, crew schedules and last minute mission schedule changes to pick their targets and submit requests to NASA.

The images taken from the shuttle were quickly downloaded from the digital camera onto the internet and into classrooms. Click on any image for a larger version or go to the KidSat Data System for more information or to view other STS 81 images. Use your atlas to locate these places on a map.
