Improving Quality with Evidence: a Workshop for Children's Hospital Clinicians on Developing Evidence-based Order Sets for Epic

The class will meet six times between March 26 and May 14
12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Elizabeth Crabtree 843-792-4348

Course Description: This workshop is designed to teach evidence-based practice (EBP) skills that will enable staff to conduct extensive evaluations of existing literature to improve patient care. The program provides a comprehensive overview of EBP, and the components essential for implementation of EBP in a clinical setting. It is designed to focus on skills needed to critically evaluate new information available from research findings and professional consensus statements. Essential tools for clinical inquiry are addressed, including: developing PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) questions, exploring levels of evidence, using the AGREE II criteria to evaluate existing EB guidelines, and critically analyzing and appraising research articles. The course provides important knowledge for integrating evidence into order sets and summaries that provide support for excellence in clinical practice. During the course, each interprofessional team will develop an EBP order set and evidence summary for use in Epic.

Course Meeting Times: The class will be held on Wednesdays or Fridays from 12 - 1:30pm, and will meet six times between March 26 and May 14. Lunch will be provided.

The Benefits:
1. Development of evidence-based order sets for the Children's Hospital, and the guarantee they will be built in Epic.
2. Opportunities for research and quality work based on identification of quality measures and data reports related to the order set.
3. Physicians may use these projects for MOC.
4. Nurses will receive CEUs, and may use these projects for RN III certification.
