Eminent Scholar Award
Catherine D. DeAngelis, Md, MPH, Editor-in-Chief, JAMA and Scientific
Publications and Professor, John Hopkins University School of Medicine,
will present her seminar as part of the Psychiatry Grand Rounds. Dr.
DeAngelis is the winner of the MUSC Eminent Scholar Award 2008. All faculty,
staff and students are encouraged to attend.

| Eminent Scholar Award: |
The MUSC Women Scholars Initiative
Presented the first MUSC Eminent Scholar Award to Dr. Connie Cepko
at Perry V.
Halushka Student Research Day 2007.
On Nov 2, 2007, Dr.
Connie Cepko gave the keynote address at MUSC Perry V. Halushka
Student Research
Day. Dr. Cepko is a Professor of Genetics
at Harvard Medical School. She is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Investigator, and in 2002 she was elected to the National Academy
of Sciences. Dr. Cepko’s work has addressed the fundamental
biology of central nervous system development and cell fate determination.
Her studies utilize the retina as a model system for understanding
the cell fate decisions made during nervous system development.
The Women Scholars Initiative selected Dr. Cepko to receive the
MUSC
Eminent
Scholar Award for her extraordinary contributions in these areas.

Conference on Mentoring Women In Biomedicine
If you missed the National Leadership Workshop on Mentoring Women in
Biomedical
Careers last November, be sure to view the plenary sessions now available
at
http://womeninscience.nih.gov/mentoring
More than 500 registrants from government, academia and industry
attended the
event, which was sponsored by the NIH Working Group on Women in Biomedical
Careers and the Office of Research on Women's Health and included
presentations
by NIH Director Elias Zerhouni and NIH Deputy Director Raynard Kington.
