NEW MUSC Virtual Private Network
The new VPN server is now available for use at http://vpn.musc.edu
We will stop accepting VPN client connections to the old VPN server on July 31, 2008.
Advice on making the transition
Do not connect to the OLD vpn server while trying to connect to the NEW vpn server, or vice-versa.
We recommend uninstalling the OLD vpn client from your computer, before using the NEW VPN server.
The new server, http://vpn.musc.edu, is only available for external users.
vpn.musc.edu does not resolve with DNS from an inside connection.
Two ways to use new VPN: Web Portal or AnyConnect
Web Portal Access
This type of VPN access is appropriate for basic connections. Web Portal allows you to do the following.
browse any MUSC website
connect to file shares, such as homeroom
initiate RDP (remote desktop) session
initiate telnet and ssh sessions
Keep in mind that Web Portal is only granting the kinds of access listed above through the WebPortal page. It is not tunneling all traffic. You could continue to use a different browser window to access Internet sites, for example. This also means that you must use the address bar on the Web Portal page to access internal MUSC sites. When you browse with the Web Portal, you will see a small group of icons in the top right corner of your browser pane. Use these icons for navigating with the Web Portal.
AnyConnect Client
The AnyConnect client provides encrypted access (an SSL tunnel) to the MUSC internal network, which is very similar to the old VPN client. This tunnel will secure all connections to the MUSC internal network. In fact, it forces all your computer traffic through the tunnel. Use the link on the left of the Web Portal page to download and install the AnyConnect client. Use the AnyConnect client anytime you need to establish a VPN tunnel to the MUSC network. (Note: When the AnyConnect client is connected, you will not be able to use the Web Portal functions.)
