Reward and Recognition Program - Applause Program
Each year, the University’s Finance & Administration Division Applause Program awards one “Employee of the Year” winner for each of its three areas (Engineering & Facilities, Finance, and Operations).  The winners are selected by the Rewards & Recognition Committee (RRC) from all “Employee of the Month” winners from the preceding calendar year.  Each winner receives an engraved Pillar statue and a $500 employee incentive award during the January Employee Appreciation Celebration.

2008 F&A employees of the year
(L to R: Andrew Nelson, Jennifer Hutson, Cheryl Brian)

These three employees’ best demonstrated the pillars of MUSC Excellence.  Andrew Nelson sought new ways to achieve better customer satisfaction, and to improve financial results for his zone and for MUSC by proposing to engage a new process to treat and de-scale water used in boilers and chillers on campus.  Currently the water is chemically treated to prevent the build up of scale and other growth which impacts the life of boilers and chillers.  Andrew’s research resulted in a proposal to use an inline de-scaling treatment based on magnetism rather than chemical treatment.  This proposal is currently being considered by decision makers and, if implemented, this process will save MUSC thousands of dollars each year.  Andrew went the extra mile by exploring the previously unrecognized adaptability of our systems and of our technological perspective, for the betterment of MUSC, MUHA and UMA.  Jennifer McCall Hutson volunteered to take on additional duties of a staff member that went out on extended leave.  She took on responsibilities that were somewhat unfamiliar to her, and spent time learning the processes and procedures of these duties well enough to keep the department’s reporting functions moving.  This resulted in many extra hours of work.  Jennifer’s extra efforts were much appreciated by her department.  For years Cheryl Brian has served employees of both at MUSC and MUHA by volunteering her personal time to administer influenza vaccines.  In 2007 alone, Cheryl provided hundreds of vaccines to her fellow employees.  She also administered vaccines at the Mass Inoculation Disaster Tent, and visited several units at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Main Hospital to administer their flu vaccines.  Cheryl’s regular work and deadlines were waiting for her each time she returned to her office.  Yet she still willingly gave of her time to serve her co-workers.  She also does an exceptional job managing employee exposures to blood borne pathogens by meeting with Hospital Service Coordinators and various departments, even after hours, to discuss their concerns and questions about BBPEs.  Her generosity of time and spirit are appreciated by all.
