Charleston,
South Carolina "The Holy City"
For
more than 300 years, Charleston has been one of the most unique
cities in America. It would be hard to imagine a place offering
a more enjoyable environment in which to live and work, as it combines
the best that life has to offer: historic charm of century-old homes,
plantation gardens, cultural festivals, symphony and contemporary
music concerts, dance and performing arts, museums, libraries, art
galleries, dozens of first-rate restaurants, cozy cafes, lively
night spots, mile after mile of sandy Atlantic beaches, fishing
of all kinds, sailing, windsurfing, and other water sports, football,
basketball, baseball, soccer, and hockey, some of the country's
finest golf courses, and much more - all in a pleasant, mid-sized
city that is world renowned for its friendliness courtesy, and harmony.
Charleston, a bustling seaport with
about half a million people in its metropolitan area, is located
on a peninsula formed by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The historic
district, in which the MUSC campus and hospital are located, offers
a cosmopolitan, European style of living with quiet, winding streets
and a blend of historic architecture that is carefully protected
by local preservation organizations. The outerlying areas of the
city include modern residential communities, seaside resorts, and
suburban areas offering the pleasures of small town living. Charleston
and its environs enjoy an average temperature of 65 degrees, with
warm summers and mild winters which permit a wide range of year-round
outdoor activities.
In addition to the Medical University of
South Carolina, Charleston is also home to the College of Charleston,
the nation's oldest municipal college and now a state institution;
Charleston Southern University; the Citadel; and Trident Technical
College. With a total higher-education enrollment of 20,000 students,
these institutions contribute greatly to the community and create
a stimulating environment for people of all ages.
