Annual Membership Banquet, Monday, April 14
The Charleston Chapter of Sigma Xi invites you to attend our annual membership banquet, Monday, April 14 in the Regimental Commanders' Riverview Room, Coward Hall, The Citadel. Dr. Naomi Miller, Senior Research Scientist at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Applied Science Center for Archeology, will be our speaker. Her talk is entitled "Past, Present and Future of the Landscape in the Land of King Midas: Gordion, Turkey." (See below for abstract of lecture.) Dr. Miller is an archaeologist specializing in the study of plant remains from archaeological sites. She has conducted most of her fieldwork in west and central Asia: Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Turkmenistan, but has also done stints in New Jersey, Tunisia, and elsewhere. Her main research interests are the long-term impact of human societies on the landscape, and ancient economy and land use.
The festivities will begin at 6:00 pm with a reception. In addition to sparkling white grape juice punch, a cash bar serving wine and beer ($3.50/glass or can) will be available. Dinner will be served at 7:00 pm with the program following.
Dinner is a choice of three entrées: marinated and grilled filet mignon served medium with mushroom demi-glaze, pecan-encrusted snapper with bourbon cream sauce on the bottom, or vegetarian porcini mushroom ravioli with grape tomatoes, artichoke hearts and parmesan. Side vegetables with the first two entrées will be piped whipped potatoes with cheddar and chives, and crisp pencil thin asparagus with lemon zest. Dessert will be hot cherry cobbler with cake crumbles and ground gingersnap. Spouses and guests are cordially invited. Please RSVP your entrée preferences using the attached form to Dr. Mei Chen by April 7th with a check payable to The Citadel, Sigma Xi. Dinner is $28 per person for the filet or snapper dinner, and $21 per person for the ravioli. For more information please email Dr. Chen (mei.chen@citadel.edu) or call her (953-7896).

When you come to a T intersection, turn right. After you go completely behind Watts Barracks, Coward Hall is on your right. You can park in this area. The Riverview Room is in the part of the building that you see and faces the Ashley River. An elevator is available on the opposite side of the building.

Abstract of the lecture
Gordion was the capital of ancient Phrygia and reputed home of King Midas (c. 700 BC). Its monuments include the Midas Mound (Tumulus MM), nearly a hundred smaller burial mounds, and the ancient city of Gordion itself. Studies of the modern forest and steppe vegetation suggest how ancient people may have used different areas within the landscape. Plant remains recovered from the settlement document changes in vegetation and land use from about 1200 BC to 1000 AD. Inspired by our glimpses of formerly healthy steppe vegetations, the Gordion Project is attempting to create a solid cover of grasses and flowers on the Midas Mound to stem erosion.
