2008-09 MUSC SGA Executive Officers

Sheldon Bates (CODM) - email
President
We are fortunate to be enrolled at such a successful institution as MUSC. Not only are our professors and administrators among the top in the nation, but our student body has been consistently enhanced under the strong leadership of our past student presidents. That being said, there is still much to do, and after serving on the SGA for two years, I feel compelled to pursue an executive office in order serve the student body as its advocate to the administration. Students deserve a leader who is experienced and committed to protecting and improving student interests on the university level. Since being elected as a representative two years ago, I have established a reputation of being committed to the SGA by serving beyond the requirements of the position. I also currently sit on the University Parking Committee, protecting student interests in the new Bee Street Garage. While serving my class on the SGA, I have enjoyed working closely with the executive officers and developing relationships with administrators. As president, I will to continue to develop these relationships and advance the work begun by the current student administration. My vision is for our student government to be more in tune with the ideas of individual students, to improve interprofessional interactions both academically and socially, and to mobilize MUSC student voices to influence budget decisions by the state legislature.  I look forward to hearing your ideas and working with you to affect change for the betterment of MUSC. I appreciate your vote.

Programs VP
Hello Fellow Students! For the past two years I have had the pleasure of serving as a SGA representative for the CGS. During this time I have participated on the Programs Committee and have enjoyed working with the Student Programs office, where I have learned a lot about SGA and the events that we sponsor. While at MUSC I have also been an active representative for the Graduate Student Association, and for the past two years I have served as the Vice President for this organization. My duties as the VP for GSA included planning all social events and programs for the students and faculty of the CGS. This opportunity has allowed me to learn a great deal about coordinating events as well as planning gatherings for diverse groups of people. One of the many things that I have learned along this journey is that I have a passion for organizing events and activities for others. I believe this experience and my participation with the Programs Committee on SGA have truly made me an ideal candidate for the Programs VP position on SGA. I am an active participant on numerous university committees and volunteer programs that have helped me gain the knowledge and confidence to be a successful leader for this student body. I assure you that I will work exceptionally hard to make this coming year one of the most exciting and successful years yet! I would greatly
appreciate your vote on March 26th and 27th! Thank you for your support!

Academic VP
During this last year I have had the privilege of serving as a student government representative and on the programs committee. These positions, as well as my experiences as an undergraduate working for student government, have given me a comprehensive understanding of the issues that the SGA handles on a weekly basis.  Therefore, I feel that I can provide strong leadership as your academic vice president. As your academic vice president, I will continue to work with the Library staff to improve the carrel system that has been implemented, while seeing that any accommodations that would better students' lives are addressed.  As chair of the honor council I will uphold the integrity of this university and each college, while ensuring that each student is treated fairly.  Furthermore, if elected I would like to address the issue of tuition increases, from both an educative and an action perspective.  I feel that students are not properly educated on why our tuition is increased, or what they can do to influence the rising cost.  Accordingly, I would like to establish a lobbying committee of students so that we may have a voice to address our concerns.  If not a board of our own students, then petition the lobbying organization of MUSC to help speak on the students' behalf.  Moreover, I would work with the administration and the SGA President to assure that every students concerns are understood and heard.

Secretary
Hello fellow students! I am running for the office of Secretary of the SGA for a second term. I am a second year student in the College of Pharmacy. This past year I have had the pleasure of serving the SGA and student body as the MUSC SGA Secretary. I have built strong relationships with the advisors in Student Programs, the current Executive board, and the current reps on the SGA. I believe I have gained the experience and knowledge to fully serve the students as the SGA Secretary. This year has been exciting with the utilization of the new SGA website, the transfer of Student Lifelines to the web, MUSC Alert, and the prospect of expanding the SGA TV. I look forward to improving the website in the future and working with the Executive board and the Communications Committee to intensity the communication among the University Administration, the SGA, and the six colleges. I have a strong desire to serve, and represent my fellow students in the advancement of our experiences here on campus. I am a highly motivated, dedicated, organized individual, and I will fulfill these responsibilities to the best of my ability. My experience, enthusiasm, and commitment to my fellow students will allow me to bring new ideas and perspectives to the Executive Board and the SGA. I am very excited about representing the student body on the University level, and I encourage everyone to vote in this year's election. Thank you!

Treasurer
So you've made it this far in the voting process. You've scrolled down the page, wanting to finish this off before your next class or before you head home. I ask you to take a second look at this paragraph and support me for treasurer of MUSC's SGA. The office of treasurer can sometimes go unnoticed - accomplishments largely go under the radar and failures tend to be magnified. I will bring to the office a mandate of fiscal responsibility and transparency that ensures that no mistakes go unnoticed and that you, as a student, will be able to see where your money is going. As chair of the Service Committee, I plan on bringing together members of all different colleges in order to serve our community while meeting people that we're not necessarily in class with. I plan on working with the committee to help existing service projects that need some extra help while bringing innovation to the table, creating service projects that aid communities in need of our support. I will bring forth my experience working with The Crucible, expanding service initiatives at Crisis Ministries, and my extensive student government experience in college to make our transition into next year smooth and effective. In the end, I want to make sure that your money is going towards programs that benefit you and make your time here more enjoyable - and that you know about it. For these reasons, I ask and thank you for your support as treasurer.
