Geriatric Oral Health Curriculum (30 modules)
Purpose
To disseminate a geriatric oral health curriculum for students, faculty, health care and social services professionals. The curriculum can be used for self-study, classroom instruction, in-service trainings, and grand rounds. The curriculum can also be adapted for use in courses at universities and colleges and to train paraprofessionals and caregivers.
Overview
The Geriatric Oral Health Curriculum is an interdisciplinary educational resource that addresses issues related to oral health of the older adult. The participants will gain knowledge about the older population today, the aging process in general, the effects of aging on oral health, special considerations in caring for the older adult with multiple diseases and disabilities, and current treatments, research findings, and resources. Activities will include: Ice Breakers, Case Studies, Pre-Post tests, and Activities.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Gain an understanding of the specific challenges/issues related to geriatrics;
- Increase awareness of the aging population and its relationship to oral health;
- Coordinate dental care with other health care disciplines, e.g., medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, social work, and public health;
- Recognize the major risk factors for oral disease in older adults;
- Identify oral conditions common to older persons, with particular emphasis on pathology which increases in frequency with age;
- Better understand the oral-systemic connection;
- Perform an oral assessment on older patients; and
- Gain knowledge of current technologies, research findings, and resources related to oral health for older adults.
Outcomes
- Increases knowledge among faculty, students, and health and social services professionals about older adult oral health issues and practices;
- Facilitates classroom training for faculty;
- Provides ready-made learning materials for easy distribution to practicing providers.
