SC-GEC Activities:
Coastal Carolina University is currently developing online courses for the Bachelor's certificate program offered on campus at Coastal. The projected date of completion for all seven classes of the certificate program is 3-5 years. Courses available beginning Fall 2002 in an online format include Biology of Aging (Biol 470) and Gerontology (Psyc 425). Additional courses available online by Spring 2003 include Sociology of Aging (Soc 455) and Psychology of Aging (Psyc 423).

Other activities: The Life Long Learning Society
The Division of Continuing Studies at Coastal Carolina University provides the best in adult education to residents throughout the Conway and Grand Strand areas. Lifelong Learning courses are designed to meet the needs of busy, active adults and are offered during day and evening hours for your convenience. SC-GEC Activities:

  1. Provide community-based geriatric experiences for students;
  2. Develop a competency-based framework for culturally sensitive services;
  3. Establish/expand linkages among HBCUs in South Carolina to combine aging initiatives;
  4. Modify/adapt the ethnogeriatric training modules for statewide usage ; and
  5. Collaborate statewide agencies/program planning committees to ensure presentation of aging issues.

SC-GEC Activities:

  1. AHEC provides continuing education, health profession student placements in rural areas, and medical residency training programs.
  2. The AHEC SCRIPT program provides an interdisciplinary group of health profession students with opportunies to learn about geriatric care.
  3. SC AHEC co-sponsored the 2002 Certified Nursing Assistant Conference and Rural Health Association conference both of which included the GEC.
  4. There will be a series of four regional forums identified for educational programs for years 2-5. The priority areas will include: Health Promotion & Mental Health, Diversity & Ethnogeriatrics, End of life issues & Palliative Care and Rural & Medically Underserved Community Outreach.
  5. SCAHEC is planning an Aging Summit for year 5.

SC-GEC Activities:

  1. To increase opportunities for students to have field practicums in aging sites in the USC College of Social Work from 25 to 40 in the next 5 years.
  2. To increase providers' knowledge about aging issues.
  3. To increase aging information on the Columbia campus of the University of South Carolina
  4. Deliver training for 25 social workers at four regional Community Forums on mental health issues.
  5. Develop 2 web-based certificate courses for social workers.
  6. To collaborate with at least 2 annual conferences to facilitate the inclusion of aging presentations.
