The SC-GEC Certificate
The SC-GEC is offering a 40-hour certificate of training in geriatrics and
gerontology to health and social services providers. Participants can accrue
40
contact hours of training over a 5 year period and become eligible to receive
the SC-GEC Training Certificate.
Participants should complete a SC-GEC Participant Registration form whenever
the SC-GEC is co-sponsoring a training event and the forms are distributed.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT:
SC-GEC/Center on Aging Collaborative:
The overall goal of the Center on Aging is to create a collaborative environment
on specific topic areas in aging, as well as to recruit new faculty and function
as a resource in our field for the South Carolina general public and health
care professionals. To create a forward momentum, it is critical that all
participants recognize and agree with the foundational pieces of the center.
The Center on Aging is a research, service, and education center at the Medical
University of South Carolina. The center was approved by the South Carolina
Commission on Higher Education December 3, 1987, giving it the status of the
oldest research center at the University. Dr. Lotta Granholm came on board,
as director for the center, July 1 of 2001.
Dr. Esther Forti, Director of the SC-GEC acts as the Associate Director of
Outreach/ Education for the Center on Aging. For more information on the Center

Alzheimer's Disease Research in SC
This presentation reviews Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders
(ADRD) in South Carolina. It discusses the implications for ADRD research,
preventive mechanisms that should be promoted to delay onset of ADRD, and reviews
the Alzheimer's Disease Registry in SC. The presentation was developed by Jim

WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON AGING UPDATES:
The South Carolina
White House Conference on Aging (SC WHCOA) occurs once a
decade to make aging policy recommendations to the White House Conference on
Aging (WHCOA). Recommendations from the White House Conference on Aging are
then sent to the President and Congress. These recommendations assist the public
and private sectors in promoting dignity, health, independence and economic
security of current and future generations of older persons. The 2005 South
Carolina White House Conference on Aging occurred on April 25-27th at
Springmaid
Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC.
SC Priority Issues: In-migration; Planning for the Future; Workforce
Issues; Healthcare; Long Term Care and a Continuum of Care; Impact of Alzheimer's
Disease on Families, Business, and Government; Caregiving; Need to Develop
