Increased mortality of patients with AKI.
Patients with progressively worse kidney injury have a  higher mortality rate after coronary artery bypass surgery. Modified from Mangano et al., Ann Intern Med. 128:194 (1998)

The Southern Acute Kidney Injury Network is a group of physicians and scientists interested in improving the care of patients with  AKI. The group is made up of Nephrologists, Critical Care Physicians and Scientists. AKI is currently defined as an increase in serum creatinine of 0.3 mg/dl or greater over a period of 48 hours or less. Even small amounts of kidney injury are associated with a large increase in adverse outcomes such as prolonged ICU stay, prolonged hospital stay and death. Patients with AKI have a 50% mortality rate. Currently, no accurate diagnostic or prognostic markers exist for AKI and no treatments have been shown to decrease the need for dialysis or decrease mortality in AKI.
