What Is Sustainability?
According to Webster’s dictionary, sustainability can be defined as follows:
Main Entry: sus tain able
1. capable of being sustained
2. a : of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged <sustainable techniques> <sustainable agriculture> b : of or relating to a lifestyle involving the use of sustainable methods <sustainable society>
The definition from Webster’s is the foundation of the general meaning of sustainability. The idea of sustainability has taken on many forms and has been interpreted and implemented from many perspectives.
MUSC prides itself on its sustainable campus practices, such as
reducing, reusing, and recycling solid waste, recycling construction and
demolition waste, conserving energy and water resources, and reducing
biohazardous, radioactive and chemical waste.
Everyday actions make a difference! Students, faculty, and staff can help "green" the campus in simple ways as a part of daily life:
Recycle paper and
aluminum containers--it matters!
Let computer monitors sleep and turn off unnecessary lights and appliances.
Call
792-4119 if you see a leaking faucet or toilet.
Walk, bike,
carpool or ride the bus.
Thanks for your help making MUSC a sustainable campus.
