The Patrol Division is commanded by a Major and consists
of three shifts. Each shift is comprised of a Lieutenant, Sergeant and twelve
Public Safety Officers.
Public Safety Officers are commissioned as State Constables
by the Governor and have full police authority and jurisdiction throughout
the state.
The Shift officers are assigned to cover the campus,
which is divided into Five beats and four stationary posts.
They perform their duties either in a marked cruiser, on a bicycle,
or on foot patrol.
These officers respond to calls for service which
include: processing police reports; opening car doors; jump starting vehicles;
providing escorts to include VIP
escorts; opening and securing building doors for normal operations; opening
and securing building doors upon special request to the Patrol Commander;
controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic as needed; arrest and prosecute
law violators through the court system; and perform crime prevention while
interacting with the victim, MUSC staff and clientele, as well as the general
public. We also participate in all special events such as the MUSC Presidents
Inauguration and the Commencement Ceremony.
The division has the following equipment available
for use: five marked police cruisers; twenty two police bicycles; two marked
easy-go-carts; one marked pickup truck, one marked Vans, and one marked 4
