Conference Overview

Mental health issues often affect women differently than men. Anxiety and depression are not only more common in women but depression may be more persistent. The hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy, childbirth or menopause, can create periods of increased vulnerability to the effects of stress. We are increasingly recognizing differences that exist between women and men in the response to our most commonly used treatments. Additionally, children are another special population with needs that differ from average adults in diagnosis and management of mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders.  It is therefore timely that this year’s Psychiatry Update will focus on advances in understanding mental health issues in women and children. Overall, this year’s Update will provide a comprehensive review of some of the most important issues in psychiatry being faced in an increasingly diverse and multicultural society.
