Biographical Sketch

Dr. Frueh received a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of South Florida in 1992.  After completing his pre-doctoral internship in clinical psychology in 1992 at the MUSC/VAMC consortium he took a position as staff psychologist at the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC, working as a clinician in the posttraumatic stress disorder specialty clinic from 1992-1999.  In 1999 he was awarded a 5-year career development award (K-series) from the National Institute of Mental Health.  Since that time he has obtained seven additional federally funded research grants as PI, including two R01s, from a range of federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, National Institute of Mental Health, and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.  To date his research has resulted in over 100 scientific publications.  He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Traumatic Stress, is a member of the Editorial Boards of three other journals, and regularly serves on national study sections to review federal grant applications.  He has received eight MUSC teaching awards for his research mentorship and clinical supervision.

  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): mental health service delivery, phenomenology, epidemiology, assessment, behavioral treatment, racial and rural disparities, public mental health systems, disability benefits, prisoners of war.
  • Telehealth Service Delivery: posttraumatic stress disorder, alcohol use disorders, depression, rural populations.
  • Patient Safety in Psychiatric Settings
  • Minority and Rural Disparities in Chronic Diseases
  • Qualitative Research Methods
