Darlene Shaw is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where she is the Vice Chair for Education. She received her B.A. in Psychology, Summa Cum Laude, from Ohio University where she was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Ohio University and completed her internship at MUSC. Dr. Shaw worked for approximately thirteen years as the Director of the Psychiatry/Psychology Consult Liaison Service at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1988 she founded Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), a mental health clinic which provides services to the MUSC student body. She continues as the Director of CAPS and has developed CAPS as an educational site for psychology interns, psychology postdoctoral fellows, and psychiatry residents. In 2005 Dr. Shaw was named the Executive Director of Student Health and Wellness at MUSC. A major focus of Dr. Shaw’s career has been medical student education and for the past 20+ years she has been the Director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Psychiatry at MUSC. For many years she has also been the Course Director for the Behavioral Science Course for 1st-year medical students and the Course Director for the 3rd-Year Clerkship for medical students. Her teaching activities include curriculum development, lectures to various trainee groups, and supervision of psychology interns, medical students, and psychiatry residents. Dr. Shaw has authored more than 130 professional publications, book chapters, and presentations. Her principle goal as a research mentor for psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows has been to build upon the trainees’ areas of interest and facilitate the transition of their work to the MUSC environment. Dr. Shaw is active in the national organization of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry. She has held several elected offices in the organization and is currently serving as the Treasurer. In 1995 she was selected from a nation-wide pool for the inaugural class of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program. She has won numerous teaching awards, including the South Carolina Psychological Association 2003 award for Outstanding Teacher and the Health Sciences Foundation 2005 Teaching Excellence Award in the Educator/Mentor category. In addition to providing direct clinical services to MUSC students at CAPS, Dr. Shaw maintains a private practice through University Medical Associates based at MUSC. She employs an integrative approach to treatment utilizing supportive, cognitive behavioral and insight-oriented techniques. She provides services to older adolescents and adults and has a growing practice in the area of forensic psychology. |
