Biographical Sketch

John M. Oldham, M.D. is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Executive Director of the Institute of Psychiatry, Medical University of South Carolina. Prior to his move to the Medical University of South Carolina in 2002, Dr. Oldham was Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Chief Medical Officer of the New York State Office of Mental Health, and the Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor and Acting Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Oldham’s current responsibilities include serving as Treasurer of the American College of Psychiatrists, Vice President of the South Carolina Psychiatric Association, and as Chair of the Council on Quality Care of the American Psychiatric Association. He is the immediate Past President of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders, Past President of the Association for Research on Personality Disorders, and Past President of the New York County District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Oldham is actively involved in teaching and research. His research interests are focused on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with severe personality disorders. He is editor of the Journal of Psychiatric Practice, and he has published extensively.
