Biographical Sketch

Phillippe Cunningham completed the requirements for a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and completed a Pre-Doctoral Clinical Internship with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of the Medical University of South Carolina.  Dr. Cunningham is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Family Services Research Center at the Medical University of South Carolina.  In his current position, Dr. Cunningham supervises family therapists providing intensive family- and home-based services to substance abusing juvenile delinquents involved in Juvenile Drug Court and youth presenting severe mental health problems.  He has had a longstanding commitment to addressing the psychosocial needs of children and adolescents, especially those who are disadvantaged and under served.  His clinical and research interests include (1) Issues pertinent to ethnic minority communities, especially community violence and substance abuse; (2) Developing a measure of cultural competence; (3) Evaluating innovative and culturally competent clinical services for disadvantaged youth and families, especially community-based services; (4) Developing and evaluating community- and school-based violence prevention and intervention strategies; and (5) Training and supervising mental health professionals in providing innovative and evidenced-based child-centered and family-based services.
