The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Neurosciences at the Medical University of South Carolina offer an integrated training program that prepares residents for specialty board eligibility in both Psychiatry and Neurology in just six years.

The growth of neuroscience research in the last decade has provided an opportunity to bring together areas of medicine that have drifted apart. This program is based on the belief that psychiatry and neurology are intimately related medical specialties that should be mutually enriching. Physicians with expertise in both psychiatry and neurology will be in a unique position to offer leadership in academic, research and clinical roles in the future.

This is a six-year program consisting of an internship year, followed by four alternating years of neurology and psychiatry, and finally an integrated PGY-6 year of both psychiatry and neurology. There is ongoing participation in clinics and case conferences of both specialties throughout the program. Additionally, there is a monthly journal club/didactic session. The program is increasingly linking the program curriculum with that developed by the American Neuropsychiatric Association.

Application Process:
Thank you for your interest in the combined Neurology/Psychiatry Residency Program here at MUSC. We are participate in NRMP and accept applications through ERAS only. Interviews are granted on a first come, first served basis.  Applicants with strong academic interests and a commitment to neuropsychiatry are encouraged to apply.

The following items must be received through ERAS (please go to the ERAS website for further instructions):

• Common Application Form
• Personal Statement
• Curriculum Vitae
• Recent Photograph
• Dean's Letter
• Four Other Letters from medical school faculty (at least one from psychiatry faculty)
• Official Medical School Transcript
• Copy of USMLE or COMLEX board scores. Results of USMLE Step 2 (CK) should be received by February 1, 2006.

Applications from International Medical School Graduates including American citizens from medical schools outside the U.S. or Canada, must also include a valid copy of the ECFMG certificate, and Verification that you have worked at least 2 years in an American  Medical School or Hospital setting as a research assistant or observer. Applicants to our program must have graduated from medical school within the last three years, have minimum scores of 210 on both Steps 1 and 2 of the USMLE examinations, be fluent in both  written and spoken English, and submit 2 additional letters of recommendation from attending physicians where you obtained experience in an American hospital setting. With regard to VISA sponsorship, the program will determine its sponsorship of J1 VISAs on a case by case basis, however, we are currently not set up to support the H1B VISA process.
