At the completion of this session, the participant should be able to: |
1) | Understand the nature and causes of “neurodegenerative” changes in schizophrenia and their association with apoptotic neuroplastic processes |
2) | Discuss emerging evidence surrounding psychosis and inflammatory processes in the brain, and the role of anti-inflammatory agents in augmenting antipsychotic pharmacotherapy |
3) | Understand the neuroprotective properties of atypical antipsychotics, specifically neurotropic effects and neurogenesis. |
4) | Understand the role of atypical antipsychotics in the treatment of drug-naive schizophrenia patients |
5) | Discuss the characteristics of genes that have been identified as associated with both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder |
