Overview of Recent Advances in the Neurobiology of Schizophrenia

At the completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

1)

Understand the nature and causes of “neurodegenerative” changes in schizophrenia and their association with apoptotic neuroplastic processes

2)

Discuss emerging evidence surrounding psychosis and inflammatory processes in the brain, and the role of anti-inflammatory agents in augmenting antipsychotic pharmacotherapy

3)

Understand the neuroprotective properties of atypical antipsychotics, specifically neurotropic effects and neurogenesis.

4)

Understand the role of atypical antipsychotics in the treatment of drug-naive schizophrenia patients  

5)

Discuss the characteristics of genes that have been identified as associated with both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
