Description of Program
Our group is interested primarily in the cellular oxygen-sensing system.  We use the heart as a model because it displays a wide array of acute and chronic responses to lower than optimal oxygen concentrations.  In particular, we have begun to examine the prolyl hydroxylase family of oxygen-sensing enzymes to determine their contribution to the hypoxic responses of the heart.  Additional interests include the role of the mitochondrial preprotein import and mitochondrial biogenesis in cellular metabolic dysfunction.
