Protocol for Media Visits to the MUSC Campus

As Public Relations representatives at the Medical University of South Carolina, our office frequently works with local, regional and national media to facilitate news coverage of the progress involving research, education and patient care at our institution. We do our best to respond to all inquiries in a timely manner, with the expectation that our colleagues in the media industry will follow the necessary protocol while seeking information.

All media representatives (MR) wishing to film or conduct interviews anywhere on the MUSC campus must first contact the Office of Public Relations to arrange the visit and verify that a media escort will be available or is needed.

  • The MR (including reporters and camera and/or audio operators) are not allowed to enter MUSC patient facilities without a member of the Public Relations (PR) staff escorting them.
  • In the event that a PR staff member or departmental PR personnel are unavailable for escort, the media representative will be informed that he or she must come back at a later time or date if an escort is required.

PRESS Badges: All MR entering MUSC facilities must obtain a PRESS badge upon arrival to campus via a PR staff member. The MR shall not be allowed in any area of the MUSC system without displaying the PRESS badge at all times and must be accompanied by an escort at all times.

  • To receive a badge, the MR must present a photo ID to the Office of Public Relations staff member, or departmental public relations representative, and sign a log that includes the name of the MR, news organization, the specific purpose of the visit, date, and arrival time.
  • Once the MR has completed his or her assignment, the MR must return the badge to the public relations staff member and the sign out time must be documented in the log.

Parking is available in the horseshoe outside of the Main Hospital on Ashley Avenue as spaces permit. MR wishing to reserve parking must notify the Office of Public Relations prior to the scheduled visit.

In the event that MR are found within patient areas without an escort, they will be immediately removed from the facility, and a course of further action will be determined in accordance with the MR’s protocol violation.
