MUSC Colleges and Statistics

The MUSC College of Graduate Studies (CGS) offers unique opportunities for interested students, including a variety of advanced medical degrees. Its current statistics include:

- 258 students
- 490 faculty (full and part-time)

  • The mission of the College of Graduate Studies is to educate biomedical and behavioral scientists at the masters, doctoral and postdoctoral levels and to foster the discovery of new knowledge in a premier academic environment. The College is dedicated to continuing the development of state-of-the art facilities, technologies and scholastic opportunities for the pursuit of graduate degrees at the master and doctoral levels, and for postdoctoral study.

  • Students are exposed to innovative research through any of the following programs: a Masters of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree in the biomedical sciences, an NIH funded MD/PhD program with the College of Medicine, a DMD/PhD program with the College of Dental Medicine and a PharmD/PhD with the College of Pharmacy for students interested in careers in medical, dental or pharmaceutical research.

  • The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) offers outstanding undergraduate students the opportunity to work closely with faculty members on cutting edge biomedical research projects. This 10-week program places undergraduate participants with faculty members whose research is closely related to academic interests and professional goals of the students. Each student is given his/her own project under the supervision of the faculty mentor.

 The MUSC College of Dental Medicine (CDM) serves as the state’s only dental medicine college and has been recognized as one of the best dental medicine programs in the Southeast, with departments including materials science, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry and orthodontics; restorative dentistry and stomatology  Its current statistics include:

- 226 Dental students
- 26 Residents
- 78 faculty (full and part-time)


Other facts about CDM include:

  • The South Carolina Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) for Oral Health at MUSC trains a cadre of targeted researchers who will continue the development of the College of Dental Medicine's oral and craniofacial health research program. Thus, the South Carolina COBRE for Oral Health enables the CDM to meet the goals of its research strategic plan to develop a nationally competitive and prominent oral health research program at MUSC that directly benefits the oral health care needs of the citizens of South Carolina.

  • After decades of waiting and fundraising, the CDM will soon have its own dedicated space: http://www.musc.edu/dentistry/new_facility/

 

The MUSC College of Nursing (CON) is the only nursing program in the state that is part of an academic health sciences center, and boasts pass rates of more than 90 percent during the last five years and a time of all-time high enrollment numbers.

- 400 students (baccalaureate, masters and doctoral)
- 140 faculty (full-time and clinical)

Other facts about CON include:

  • Hosts the only nursing program in the state with a 16-month accelerated baccalaureate degree program and serves as state-leader using online learning technology to educate nurses as well as those seeking master’s and doctorate-level nursing degrees.

  • Has 13 faculty practice sites in the community including school clinics, an inner city neighborhood center, adult and child primary care clinics, nurse midwifery practices, pediatric specialty care and community outreach programs.

  • Of its full-time nursing faculty, 74 percent have received the South Carolina Palmetto Gold Award for Nursing Excellence.

 

The MUSC College of Health Professions (CHP) goal is to advance national distinction through the long term stability and growth in its core set of degree programs. There are six divisions including: anesthesia for nurses, cardiovascular perfusion, health administration and policy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, and physical therapy.

Other facts about CHP include:

  • Research plays a vital role in CHP’s strategic design, because it has a positive effect on the overall quality of the health professions educational programs.

  • The new high-tech CHP building and renovated research building further advance scholarship and elevate the program’s level of excellence. CHP’s research facility houses newly developed laboratories such as a Motion Analysis Lab, a Neurophysiology Assessment lab, and an Integrated Physiology Lab. According to an external team review of the college this year, “The facilities of College of Health Professions are quite probably the best among the top schools of Health Professions in the United States.”

 

The MUSC College of Medicine (COM) was the first medical school in the southern United States and was founded in 1824, with some of the college pioneers writing some of America’s first medical textbooks.

Other facts about COM include:

  • -The college has 25 departments which independently and collectively contribute to the education of future physicians.

  • With the opening of the Ashley River Tower in 2008, students at the college now have the opportunity to train at one of the most innovative and current hospital facilities in the nation. Housing the MUSC Heart and Vascular Center, Surgical Oncology and the MUSC Digestive Center, Ashley River Tower is moving South Carolina based health care into a new era of excellence.

The South Carolina College of Pharmacy (SCCP) was formed in 2004 through the integration of the Colleges of Pharmacy at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, and the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. The SCCP is a statewide education, research, and service institution that maximizes its resources to enable broader access to experts and an increased range of training opportunities. The SCCP offers expanded pharmacy education and service throughout the state, provides national leadership in residency programs, and conducts pioneering research that leads to new and improved treatments for common diseases.

Other facts about SCCP include:

  • The SCCP offers eight programs, including: Pharm.D.; Pharm. D./MBA ; Pharm.D./Ph.D in Pharmaceutical Sciences; Pharm.D./Ph.D in Outcomes Research; Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences or Outcomes Research; M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences; Residency (hospital and community) and continuing education (more than 10,000 participants annually).

  • The SCCP houses five research centers including the Drug Discovery Core; Center for Cellular Death, Injury & Regeneration; SC Palmetto Poison Center; Center for Medication Safety and Efficacy; and South Carolina Offering Prescribing Excellence (SCORxE)
