Access the Internet from Home Using
Point to Point Protocol (PPP)
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) provides a way for MUSC faculty, staff and students to establish an off-campus connection to the MUSC network, and use TCP/IP-based services, such as many MUSC web-based applications, IMAP E-mail (Mulberry, Netscape), Homeroom Directory Server, MUSCLS and MUSCLS Article Indexes, Erg (scientific computing services), and Atrium (pine email). Access to Internet sites outside the MUSC network is also available through PPP.
Because PPP uses software already available on with any PC or Macintosh operating system, there are no extra applications to install. Also, if you are a student or a resident, you have already been registered for PPP access. Faculty and staff who have an MNA ID can register for the service on-line (See MNA section for details on obtaining an account.)
Please note: Macintosh wireless users must sign up for a PPP account.
Appropriate Use of PPP
Before configuring your home machine for the PPP service, please be aware MUSC assumes you have read, understood, and agreed to follow the appropriate use guidelines stated in the Computer Use Policy. If inappropriate use is detected, MUSC reserves the right to deny you access to the service.
Setting up PPP
Before you can set up PPP, check that your computer meets the requirements to set up PPP successfully:

- Macintosh - Mac OS 7.6.1 or higher with OpenTransport 1.1.2 or higher

Where to get Help
OCIO-IS processes accounts and maintains the PPP server, but does not offer on-site or telephone support for PPP. OCIO-IS does not provide any technical support for home computer systems through the Support Desk. However, extensive and up-to-date documentation is available on-line, and in the Library.
- PPP Q&A - a compilation of common technical problems and frequent questions.
- PPP Help Mailing List - a local self-help email distribution list for ppp users
- See your departmental Information Technology Coordinator (ITC) for assistance.
- If you're having problems dialing into the PPP server, and suspect that the problem is with the PPP server hardware, call the Help Desk (792-9700) to report the problem. We will check the status of the server and give you a call back. For all other issues, please utilize the available resources listed above.
