PGY1 PHARMACY RESIDENCY

INTRODUCTION

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina is an ASHP-accredited post-graduate program consisting of 12 months of general training and experience. Its goals, objectives, and evaluation procedures are established to be consistent with the accreditation standards developed by ASHP. The program allows sufficient flexibility to adapt to the needs and interests of the individual resident, yet provides the basic foundation to develop professional practice skills.

A pharmacist completing this program will be a competent generalist who can function in multiple roles within a pharmacy system. Upon completion of this program, the resident will be prepared to enter a specialty residency, fellowship program or a clinical practice position.

For interested candidates, the residency in pharmacy practice may be combined with one of the department's specialized residencies (for a two-year residency). These arrangements are contingent upon the availability of residency positions and mutual agreement of the candidate and the program coordinator.

GOALS

  • Provide competent patient care throughout the clinical and operational aspects of the health system in order to provide a safe, effective, and economical medication use process.
  • Develop competence in practice management issues in order to understand the need for integrative services to support the mission of the health care system and to provide optimal patient care.
  • Educate different types of health care professionals in didactic and clinical environments.
  • Refine communication and interpersonal skills through various verbal and written exercises.
  • Further develop investigative and problem-solving skills by completion of a project and a medication use evaluation.
  • Improve drug information skills in a formal drug information setting and through rotation and call responsibilities.

Each resident will spend at least one month in each of the required areas. The first month of the residency will be spent orienting and training with the drug distribution service component of the Department of Pharmacy Services.
