RESIDENCY IN ADULT INTERNAL MEDICINE PHARMACY PRACTICE
(PGY-2)
|
Introduction
The specialty residency in Adult
Internal Medicine (AIM) at
the Medical University of South Carolina is an ASHP accredited program
consisting of 12 months of training and experience in the area of Adult
Internal
Medicine. The program allows sufficient flexibility to adapt to the
needs
of the individual resident, yet provides the basic training necessary
to
develop the professional practice skills essential to serve as a
pharmacotherapy specialist in the area of Adult Internal Medicine.
|
Goals
- To
develop the personal and professional skills necessary to serve as a
pharmacotherapy specialist and an integral member of the health care
team.
|
- To
develop future leaders in clinical pharmacy practice and education.
|
- To
prepare individuals to contribute to the body of pharmacotherapy and
pharmacy practice knowledge.
|
The Residency Program Director is responsible for organizing
and supervising the program, ensuring that
all
the objectives of the program are accomplished and that rotation site
preceptors and residents are fulfilling their respective
obligations. The rotation site preceptors
are responsible for supervising the resident's daily activities.
|
|
The
resident's role is that of novice practitioner and emerging
clinician. The resident will participate in all phases of ongoing
clinical services and, with assistance from the faculty, develop into a
competent pharmacotherapist. This training program is designed to meet
the requirements outlined in the "ASHP Supplemental Standard and
Learning Objectives for Residency Training in Adult Internal Medicine
Pharmacy Practice". Additionally, each resident will be involved
in various departmental activities designed to complement clinical
activities as well as broaden the resident's skills. The specific
responsibilities of residents are outlined in the general description
of the MUSC residency program. Overall, the program is designed to
provide the basic foundation for the development of a broad knowledge
base in internal medicine while allowing sufficient flexibility to
adapt to
the specific needs and interests of the individual resident.
|
Clinical rotations are designed to further develop the
resident's clinical expertise by providing significant responsibilities
for the
provision of clinical pharmacy services. The areas of experience will
primarily emphasize adult internal medicine. Each resident will spend
a minimum of 1 month in each of the core service areas except for
General
Internal Medicine where 2 months are required. Any remaining months may
be used as electives.
