RESIDENCY IN ONCOLOGY PHARMACY PRACTICE

Introduction

The Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center is a tertiary teaching hospital that serves the colleges of medicine, dentistry,nursing, allied health, and pharmacy. Included in the patient population served by MUSC are hematology/oncology patients of Charleston, the surrounding low country of South Carolina, and out of state referrals. The adult inpatient hematology/oncology wing at MUSC is a 25-bed unit serving the range of medical oncology, hematology, and stem cell transplant patients. The Hollings Cancer Center serves the needs of the areas adult and pediatric outpatient hematology/oncology patients, including an innovative outpatient stem cell transplant program. MUSC also provides comprehensive cancer services, including pediatric oncology, gynecologic oncology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology.

Pharmacy services for inpatient hematology/oncology patients at MUSC include a 24-hour/day centralized pharmacy, a 10-hour/day decentralized satellite pharmacist, and 24-hour/day comprehensive clinical pharmacy services provided by full-time oncology clinical pharmacy specialists. The Hollings Cancer Center pharmacy 7-day a week pharmacy services for the ambulatory oncology patients at MUSC, including the ambulatory blood/marrow transplant patients.

The Residency Experience

The experiences that can be gained from this site by a hematology/oncology pharmacy resident include a balance of acute and ambulatory patient care that spans the range of hematology/oncology patients (adult medical oncology,adult hematology, stem cell transplantation, gynecologic oncology, pediatric oncology, and radiation oncology). The resident will be involved with and learn: management of various malignant solid tumors and lymphomas, management of acute and chronic leukemias, management of autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant patients, specific dosing/compounding/monitoring of all chemotherapeutic agents, promotion of the rationale use of colony-stimulating factors and antiemetic therapies, and promotion of appropriate supportive cancer care (particularly cancer pain management) in both the inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology settings. The resident will also have various levels of involvement in clinical research, department of pharmacy service projects, and teaching of baccalaureate and doctor of pharmacy students. Didactic work includes preparation/participation in weekly oncology"Killer Sessions", as well as the oncology fellows weekly journal club.
 
 
Clinical Requirements
Orientation(includes orientation to staffing and outpatient BMT) 1 month
Adult inpatient hematology /oncology /blood & marrow transplant 4 months 
(2 x 2 month blocks)
Adult ambulatory hematology /oncology/blood & marrow transplant  3 months
Pediatric hematology /oncology  1 month
Gynecologic oncology  1 month
Electives
(eg., any of the above and/or Investigational Drugs,Infectious Disease, Research, Drug Information, etc.)
2 months

Teaching Requirements

  • Potential for lecturing to or leading case discussions with Pharm.D. students.
  • Inservices to pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff (inpatient and outpatient).
  • Co-preceptor of Pharm.D. on elective hematology/oncology rotations.
