The Schey lab is interested in understanding innate immunity in marine invertebrates. More specifically, we are examining how shrimp (Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei) respond to pathogenic or environmental challenge and isolating antimicrobial peptides in oysters. We are applying proteomics techniques to examine protein expression in challenged shrimp starting with hemolymph and gill tissues.

The Schey lab is in the process of isolating antimicrobial molecules from oyster (Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea virginica) hemolymph. Antimicrobial assays combined with mass spectrometry are used to identify and structurally characterize active compounds.
