The structure of this NCI funded training program includes a focus on molecular events distinct to cancer cells that can form the basis for therapeutic intervention. Clearly, a multiplicity of component parts underlies the drug discovery/development process. Each of the trainees will gain exposure to the 'big picture' of preclinical and clinical drug development, while developing expertise in a more focused area of interest.
The strengths of the program are the expertise of the mentors in studying the molecular events involved in the response of cells to external stimuli, their ability to ask significant questions about these events, and their experience with and commitment to postdoctoral research training.
A fundamental premise of this training program, including the selection of its faculty and postdoctoral fellows, is to bring together individuals of varying backgrounds and levels of training to discuss and learn about cancer-related problems. An important objective is to foster the participation of individuals at all levels.
