THE DEPARTMENT OF
PATHOLOGY AND LABORATORY MEDICINE

The Department is composed of four divisions: Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, Research, and Education. The Department employs 47 full-time faculty, and is responsible for the operation of diagnostic laboratories in Surgical Pathology, Autopsy Pathology, Forensic Pathology, Molecular Pathology, Cytology, Cytogenetics, Immunopathology, Hematology, Transplantation and Transfusion Medicine, Diagnostic Immunology, Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Microbiology. The combination of the clinical and basic sciences in the Department keeps students in close touch with current medical problems as they initiate and perform their research.

The research equipment available within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine reflects the diversity of the Department. Major equipment and facilities include: molecular biology facilities, protein purification and analysis equipment, transmission electron microscopy including x-ray microanalysis, freeze fracture and cryoultramicrometry facilities, tissue culture and tumor bank facilities, histopathology facilities, image processing and analysis facilities, laser capture microdissection, microscopy fluorometry, single cell microinjection, and time-lapse video imaging.
