The Cytopathology Service of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University
of South Carolina in Charleston offers three positions for a one-year program of subspecialty training in
cytopathology. During 2004, the Cytopathology Service examined 19,850 gynecologic and 2,671 non-gynecologic
specimens and in addition 1,655 fine needle aspirates. Many of the latter are obtained by the
cytopathology fellows. During the year, cytopathology fellows are given incremental responsibility for
the preparation, examination and diagnosis of various cytology specimens. The laboratory employs
state-of-the-art liquid-based technology to process 98% of specimens. Pertinent cases employ
immunocytochemical, ultrastructural, or flow cytometric analysis. The Fellowship offers in-depth exposure
to cytopathology with emphasis on clinical and histologic correlation. Active participation in
interdepartmental and intradepartmental conferences is expected. There is ample opportunity for
involvement in teaching pathology residents, medical students and cytotechnology students. The fellows
are encouraged to participate in research projects involving newer diagnostic/research methodologies
such as immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and flow cytometry. Successful completion of the
Fellowship training qualifies the candidate for special certification examination of the American Board
of Pathology.
