Post-doctoral position available to study the molecular mechanisms underlying sensory hair cell death and survival. Sensory hair cells are the mechanoreceptor cells of hearing and balance in the inner ear. Our lab uses several model systems, including an in vitro preparation of the adult mouse utricle, the HEI-OC1 auditory cell line, and zebrafish lateral line. We are currently studying the mechanism(s) of aminoglycoside- and cisplatin-induced hair cell death as well as the mechanism(s) underlying heat shock protein (HSP)-induced protection against ototoxic drug-induced hair cell death. Our studies include assays of mitochondrial function and stability, apoptotic pathways, and stress-induced survival pathways in hair cells. Techniques include fine dissection, western blotting, real-time RT-PCR, confocal microscopy, auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurements, and others.
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Requirements include
a Ph.D., preferably in Neuroscience or Cell Biology. Candidate must possess
excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Evidence of
productivity (i.e., published papers) is essential.

We also have a position available for someone with Audiology training and experience. This position will involve basic research using mice as a model system. The experiments will involve exposing mice to noise and then testing their hearing using ABR and OAE techniques.
