The Office of Special Initiatives

Begun in 2000, the Office of Special Initiatives focuses on extending the work of the Medical University into the community. Dr. Marilyn Laken is Director of the Office. She and her staff act as culture brokers, bringing together the values, needs, and resources of community and academic groups in order to create and sustain partnerships that promote the health and well-being of South Carolina's citizens. This often includes thinking "outside-of-the-box" and fostering new approaches to fulfilling the mission of the university.

Partnerships are based on true collaboration. This includes shared decisions, credit and resources. Establishing trust among partners is key to a successful collaboration. Partners plan from the beginning to sustain their programs.
