Education

The faculty and staff of the OEM Program have developed five core and nine elective computer assisted instructional (CAI) modules in OEM have been produced. The CAI modules are continuously being updated and revised. The current production version is 3.0.

The purpose of the OEM Program is to provide training in occupational and environmental medicine to the residents in the Department of Family Medicine. Residents are exposed to the basic concepts of OEM during a structured one-month rotation requiring self-study using computer assisted instructional modules and other sources of information, site visits with OEM specialists in the community, case consultation review with Division faculty, and preparation and presentation of an OEM topic or case.

OEM Rotation Objectives

By the end of the rotation the resident will be able to:

1. perform a basic OEM history and recognize the need for more detailed occupational information,
2. access the Internet for basic OEM information,
3. successfully complete (70% correct) posttests on all of the computer assisted instructional modules,
4. successfully complete (70% correct) challenge questions in selected ATSDR case studies, and
5. more readily recognize OEM illness, injury, and concerns in primary care patients.

OEM Rotation Expectations

1. attendance at all scheduled sessions,
2. completion of all computer assisted instructional module posttests,
3. completion of three or more ATSDR case studies (pretest and challenge questions), and
4. completion of an OEM case study or topic suitable for submission for publication.
